Welcome to episode ten of Divorce Thrive. My name is Wendy Rovers, I am your coach and thinking partner; I inspire moms to transition through divorce with grace.
Why is it important to understand the connection between your mind, your body and your spirit?
Divorce is a traumatic experience. Emotional overwhelm, physical exhaustion and a lowered spirit may leave you feeling lost and without the feeling of true meaning and purpose in your life.
The problem is there doesn't seem to be any time to take care of yourself?!
You have responsibilities; children to look after, coparenting plans to arrange, financial papers to review, documents from lawyers to understand, conversations with mediators to prepare for, schedules to navigate…. and the list goes on.
Although there just doesn't seem to be any time left in the day for you to take care of yourself, it is what you need most right now. With a strong mind, body, and spirit connection you will be better able to navigate this challenging time.
Following are six practices that I started using while transitioning through divorce. Practices that I continue to utilize today and have helped me to navigate the business of divorce and live a full and happy life.
Number one is exercise. While I was transitioning through divorce, and in the
middle of the overwhelm, I can clearly remember the day that I decided to make exercise a part of my life. I put my running shoes on, I stepped outside, and I went for a walk. Eighteen years later exercise is still a part of my daily routine.
Number two is sleep, it is important to get a good night's sleep. I practice light therapy to balance my serotonin and melatonin levels. I take magnesium daily. I follow a night time and morning routine. Much of what I have learned about the research and importance of sleep comes from Dr. Huberman’s podcast and Dr. Matthew Walker’s books.
Number three is journaling, I journal almost every day. I write down troubles and problems that I have, or what I would like to accomplish the following day or what I'd like to accomplish in the next year, and ALWAYS what I am grateful for.
Number four is meditation, I meditate every day. Quietly in the morning or while I am walking in nature, I intentionally give myself time to ponder my life and hopes and dreams.
Number five is food and water, eighty percent of the time I drink water and eat whole foods. You know what you're supposed to eat! Sure, I have treats, but I am intentional about the food I put into my body so I have the necessary energy for the life I choose to live.
And finally, number six; is time spent with friends and family and lots of laughter. Laughter, for me, is very healing and important in my life. So, even thought it may be difficult, and even though you may not feel like it, go out and laugh with a friend or go out and bring joy and laughter to someone else who may need it today. You will always feel just a little bit better when you do.
These six practices have helped me to live the life that I enjoy.
So, if you feel up for the challenge, pick one small thing that you can do today and see if it helps to lift your spirits. Every day you can choose to add one small thing to your daily practice and over time they will stack up
to make a huge difference in who you are and how you are showing up in your world.
If you choose to do this for you, then you can bring your best self forward to all of your problems, to your children, to their dad, and to everyone else in your life.
Yes, I know you may be thinking, ‘Yeah right. This all sounds good but my day is too busy and I have no time!’ The truth is we all have the same 24 hours in a day and I know that you have a few minutes in the next 24 hours to choose one of these practices and start looking after you. You are worth it.
Thanks for being here today, I hope to inspire you and to let you know that you are not alone. Also to remind you that you are enough!
Cheers to you first!
